Ticker: RIO : NYSE Description: Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, together with its subsidiaries, operates as a metals and mining company. It produces, exports, and supplies iron ores and pellets to the steel making industry, as well as manganese ores and iron alloys, including metallurgical ore used primarily for the production of ferroalloys; natural manganese dioxide used for the manufacture of electrolytic batteries; and chemical ore used in various industries for the production of fertilizer, pesticides, and animal food in Brazil and internationally. As of December 31, 2005, the company had approximately 7,981 million tons of proven and probable iron ore reserves. It also produces and sells non-ferrous minerals, such as kaolin, nickel, potash, gold, and copper, as well as alumina, aluminum ingots, billets, and alloys. As of December 31, 2005, the company held exploration claims covering 8.7 million hectares in Brazil, as well as 19.8 million hectares in Angola, Argentina, Australia, Chile, Gabon, Guinea, Mongolia, Mozambique, Peru, and South Africa. In addition, it engages in railroad, coastal shipping, and port handling operations. The company provides logistic services, including general cargo, passenger rail transportation, bulk terminal storage, dry bulk transportation services, coastal shipping liner services, and tug boat services. It operates 9,000 kilometers of railways, 10 port terminals, 3 capesize vessels, and 16 tug boats. Further, the company, through joint venture interests, engages in mining bauxite; refining bauxite into alumina; smelting alumina to produce primary aluminum and aluminum alloys; and providing hot-rolled steel, cold-rolled steel, galvanized steel, and steel tubes. Additionally, it has investments in 8 hydroelectric power generation projects with total projected capacity of 2,509 mega watts. The company has a strategic alliance with Nippon Steel. Companhia Vale do Rio Doce was founded in 1942 and is headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
